02 Construction of Prototype

Our prototype began as a hardcover, classic-styled book with empty pages. First we considered a control tab that pulled out to expose a small array of buttons including play/stop, and volume control. After modeling this and interacting with it, we realized that the small buttons would challenge the dexterity of even the most flexible senior user. With simplification in mind, we created the tab bellow which has only a musical note and two-color pattern. This greatly simplifies the control of the music player and allows users to control play/stop and volume functions without moving his/her hand from the tab. When the tab is pulled out from the book, the music begins playing (and a black strip is exposed between two red areas. The tab is raised to lowered along the edge of the pages of the book to control volume. When the user is ready to stop the music, the tab is pushed in.
